Special Topic Introduction

Accurate assessment of human exposure to air pollution is essential for understanding its health implications and informing effective prevention strategies. Exposure varies across indoor and outdoor microenvironments and depends on emission sources, pollutant properties, atmospheric and indoor transformation processes, and individual activity patterns. Capturing this variability requires approaches that extend beyond ambient concentration measurements to characterize the pollutants people actually inhale.

This Special Issue, “Air Pollution Exposure Assessment and Health Risks”, aims to bring together multidisciplinary research advancing the measurement, modeling, and interpretation of air pollution exposure and its associations with adverse health outcomes. Particular attention will be devoted to airborne particle characterization, source identification, and emissions from traffic, industry, and other sources. Contributions addressing personal exposure monitoring, measurement techniques and their metrological performance, emerging monitoring technologies, and models for assessing inhalation exposure are encouraged.

We welcome original research and review articles examining exposure across diverse microenvironments and population groups, including vulnerable populations. By connecting developments in exposure science with epidemiological and health risk assessment approaches, this Special Issue seeks to strengthen the evidence needed to identify exposure determinants, improve health risk estimates, and support targeted measures to reduce air pollution exposure.

Keywords

Air pollution exposure, indoor and outdoor air quality, airborne particles, personal exposure monitoring, emission sources and source apportionment, air quality monitoring technologies, health risk assessment
